about

This track was recorded in January 2012...damn thats a long time ago...like 3 years ago...(1)...I wrote the rhythm for this tune whilst giving my little girl Lani a bath...she didnt think it all that flash...to be honest neither did I but I had the lyric about fighting polar bears in my head and the melody just fitted (2)...so it stayed...the lyrics are a combination of various nights on the booze (3) that resulted in drunken antics and one night in particular where after drinking too much Bundaberg Rum (the one with the white polar bear on it) at my neighbours I vomited in my hallway and proceeded to wash my hair in said vomit...yes, not so nice...from there to being woken up in the shower with my Mother telling me how much of a silly boy I was...wow...never drink so much your Mother has to shower you...I still dont know who took my pants off (4)...doesnt really pay to think about it...datewiththeknife played this tune a few times live but as with most of these tunes it never really stuck as a main stay...I recorded this track in the shed and was my first attempt at trying to record a "bass" type track without a bass (5)...so really its not a bass track but more another guitar track that sounds nothing like a bass track...attempt lost...I remember there being alot of vocal tracks (6), one take vocal tracks because I recorded them on a sunny Sunday afternoon and I could here the neighbours having a BBQ and didnt want to interrupt there fun times and BBQ reggae with my screaming about going to sleep...the drums were a rush one take...this is the only way I know how to record drums...i dont really have a pattern in mind...I just try and do them quickly so not to annoy the neighbours...drums recorded with one mic...I record a bit weirdly...I record all guitars first then weird noisey bits then vocals and do the drums last...I dont know why I do it this way...its all pretty low fi , no frills...more out of necessity than want (7)...but meh...its what it is. (1) or longer depending on when you are reading this…that’s quite weird to think that when I recorded this tune it was ages ago…and its possible that when I wrote this it was ages ago…or it might not have been that long ago at all…I could read this tomorrow and it would be like “we’ll I wrote that yesterday”…that’s not ages.
(2) The idea of physically battling a polar bear is quite dangerous let alone battling “the” as in more than polar bear for the whole of Winter…that is quite a daunting task indeed…
(3) I use to spew quite a bit when I went out drinking…an obvious combination of too much booze and too much booze…I actually use to pride myself on my spewing prowess…that reality is it wasn’t actually that pretty…although for a bet I did spew into a pint glass…I won a fresh pint...hozah!
(4) I have since been told that my Wife (phew) took my pants off…however my Mum still washed me down…arrgghh
(5) I used my single humbuckered guitar and a bass boost and a fuzzface…it’s the bassiest thing I have ever done…so that counts…right???
(6) 10 vocal tracks…that’s way too many…too many for someone who cant actually “sing”
(7) I actually think it is more out of want…I wouldn’t know how to record any other way…my ramshackle shed full of cables and ties and connectors is great for what I do
(8) It is definitely what it is…unless its actually what it isn’t…which makes no sense what so ever so it has to be what it is…doesn’t it?

lyrics

Its been a long winter
Battling the polar bear
Just to end up here

Locked in the arms
Falling into the morose state of drunkeness

Temporarily down
On my inspiration
Soured with a hint of lime

We're taking polaroids
Its only January can we go back to sleep
Its only January

Hey baby romance isnt dead
Its just that this isnt romance it is just sex
Yeah well you'll have
Others and lose them to as we
Dance a staggered splendor on this streetlight corner

We're taking polaroids
With gaps in our teeth

Between you and me
There is a line that has been crossed
Too many times
And in this kitchen your friends are off their heads
Dancing to Morrissey
Holding my breath
has never been this hard since I was 11 years old
And as I paint the walls in bile
A multi coloured pattern explodes

Its been a long winter
Battling the polar bear
Just to end up here
